Bengal gram /Kale Chana / black chickpea Biryani..


Kale Chane (Bengal Gram ) is one of the most nutritious and rich in protein beans. Its often told by the elders that having the boiled gram water of this Bengal Grams frees you from cold. Today I am posting Biryani made of Kale chane/ Bengal Gram .


1/2 cup Kale chane
11/2 cup Basmati Rice
2-4 Tbs ghee or Oil
1medium sized Onion julienned
1 tbsp Ginger Garlic Paste
Fresh Coriander Leaves
Salt to Taste
1 bay leaf
6 black pepper (Kali Mirch).
6 cloves (Laung)
1 black cardamom (Bari Ilaichi)
½ inch piece of cinnamon (Dalchini)
2 dry red chilies
1tbsp Cumin Powder
1tsp Red Chilly Powder
1tsp Coriander Powder
1tsp Garam Masala Powder
3 cups of Water


Soak the kala chana overnight.
Then in the morning pressure cook the chickpeas till they get tender.
Soak the rice for 30 mins before cooking .
Chop the onions in juliennes.

Heat 2 tbsp of ghee / oil in a big enough pot .
Add in cumin seeds , black pepper corn , cinnamon , black cardamom , bay leaf and whole red chilies.

When it stops cluttering, add in the julienned onions + ginger garlics paste.

Let this cook for a while till the onions are cooked and turns pink.

Add in the cumin powder + coriander powder + red chilly powder + salt.
Let this cook for some time till it starts leaving oil.

Add in the cooked channa ( black gram ) and simmer for around 10 mins .


After 10 minutes add in 3 cups of water. Let the water boil .


Add in the soaked rice & fresh coriander leaves,

Cover the lid. let it the rice cook

Garnish with some chopped onions and cilantro leaves ( coriander leaves)

Serve hot with raita ( yogurt )
