Maharashtra’s Goda chicken curry is one example of the exotic chicken curries of India. Bold, and spicy is what defines this chicken curry . The goda masala is the main ingredient without which the dish loses its flavour.
I have been thinking of making this chicken curry since a very dear friend Jayesh showed me the picture of this curry prepared by his Mum . He is a big foodie . I would like to say a big ” Thank You “to Him for being there to guide and mentor me and answer all my silly queries while I was preparing this Chicken curry . And I am glad I tried this as the flavor was nothing like I have tasted before . This one is for you Jay 🙂
2 lb. chicken cleaned & skinned and cut into medium pieces
2 large onion, sliced into half moons
1 tsp ginger paste
1 1/2 tsp garlic paste
3 tbs cooking oil
2 heaped tbsp Goda masala
1 tsp red chili powder or to taste
1 tsp garam masala
Salt, to taste
8 cherry tomatoes, halves
Black peppercorn 8-10
Bay leaves 2-3
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Cinnamon stick 1 inch
Green cardamom 2-3
Black cardamom 2
Dried red chillies 2
1 cup warm water or enough to cover the chicken
Heat oil in a pan. Add the whole spices and sauté for 2 mins . Now Add onion and fry till they caramelize. Add the ginger and garlic paste and cook for a minute or two. Now add the tomatoes, Garam Masala, Goda Masala, red chilies powder and cook till the oil separates . Add the chicken pieces, salt to taste and cook for 5-6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a little water, cover and cook till done.
Garnish with chopped cilantro /coriander leaves and serve with white steamed rice and Indian Flat Breads.
If you are missing a few whole spices in your pantry, do not worry ( just add a little more goda . This Chicken curry is very liberal & the curry will still be sensational .
