Some more useful Kadha Recipes for Winter ...

#Recipe 1

Boil 5 whole black pepper pods, 4 cloves, 2-3 one-inch cinnamon sticks and a 2 inch piece of ginger in 2 cups of water for about 20 minutes till the water turns dark brown and is reduced to half its quantity and then strain it. Drinking 3-4 tablespoons of this kadha several times a day provides immediate relief from cough, cold and congestion. Honey or sugar can be added to sweeten it so that children like its taste.

#Recipe 2

A teaspoon of fennel seeds, I teaspoon of black peppercorns, 1 teaspoon of coriander seeds, 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds and 1 teaspoon of ginger powder (sonth) are to be boiled in 2 cups of water for 5-10 minutes. Strain it and drink about half a cup daily for 3-4 days for curing sore throat.

#Recipe 3

Another medicinal kadha for cold and congestion can be prepared by boiling 8-10 basil leaves along with 1 teaspoon fennel seeds and 5-7 green cardamoms and some honey or sugar (optional) in about 2 cups of water. It can be strained and had several times a day or be used for making tea. For young children or babies, it can also be added to milk every time you feed them.

#Recipe 4

A very effective kadha for fever and chest congestion can be made using 25-30 basil leaves, 3 tablespoons honey, 1 inch ginger, 1 teaspoon fennel seeds, 1 teaspoon lemon grass, 2 bay leaves, 5 cloves, 8-9 pieces of mishri (rock candy). All these ingredients are boiled with 3-4 cups of water for 10 minutes, then blended finely with a blender and then strained. Drink it thrice a day for relief from viral fever.

Mint (pudina) leaves and ginger boiled in water is an effective remedy for cough and cold.

#Recipe 6

Fenugreek-ginger tea can be prepared by adding 1 tablespoon fenugreek seeds, 7 black peppercorns and 1 teaspoon freshly minced ginger to 16 ounce of water and boiling till reduced to half the original quantity. Drink this tea for 4 times a day to get rid of symptoms of common cold.

#Recipe 7

A kadha is made by boiling 1 teaspoon of fennel seeds (saunf) and Β½ teaspoon of carom seeds (ajwain) along with some sugar and a pinch of salt in a cup of water for about 5 minutes. It provides relief from stomach pain due to gas.

An important tip :

Herbal remedies can be used in addition to the medicines prescribed by the doctor. Avoid cold drinks, ice- cream, fried food and milk products. A half teaspoon turmeric powder mixedin hot milk is also effective in bulding immunity in the winter season. Steam inhalation and keeping yourself warm ensures that any bout of cough or cold will not last long.
