Misal Pav / Moth Moong sprouts with dinner Rolls …

Misal Pav is one of the most popular Maharasthrian food which my kids relish thoroughly. If you have never tasted this, then please do so and Believe me, you will cherish this taste for a long time.

Misal’ is a spicy sprouted bean gravy topped with various namkeen / Indian snacks , chopped onions and cilantro and is served with Pav / dinner rolls .
Misal is made of a particular variety of sprouted lentil called “Matki”OR moth beans .

Serves 2-3

Ingredients for Misal :

1 cup Matki(Moth beans)
1 tsp mustard seeds
A big pinch Hing
1 medium onion , chopped fine
1 medium Potato cubed small
10-12 curry leaves
1tbs ginger garlic paste
1 medium Tomato
2 tsp Chilli powder ( or to taste )
1 tbs Goda masala , You can find the recipe HERE
1tsp garam masala
1/2 tsp turmeric
1 tbs coriander powder
Salt to taste

For serving

6 pav buns
One onion finely chopped
One tomato diced fine
1 cup farsaan or namkin of your choice and OR crushed potato chips
1/4 cup chopped Coriander leaves
1 Lemon cut into small wedges

Method

Sprouting Moth Beans
Wash matki well under cold water and soak in enough water overnight.
Second day morning, drain off excess water from the soaked beans.
Put the soaked beans in the cheesecloth and wrap well.
Leave it to sprout on the counter for at least 12 hrs . I kept mine in the oven with light ON .

After sprouting is done, boil sprouts in pressure cooker until 1 whistle or 10 mins .

Heat oil in a pan.

Once oil is hot add mustard seeds and once they start spluttering add pinch of hing.
Now add curry leaves & onion, mix and saute till onion gets light golden color.
Now its time to add ginger garlic paste and sauté for a min. Add cubed potatoes & tomatoes., red chili powder, Goda masala mix and cook until tomato breaks down.
Now add boiled matki, enough water and mix well.
Add salt to taste.
And simmer the curry over medium heat for 10 mins .
Matki Rassa is ready .

To assemble Misal :

Take an individual bowl/plate & add ladle full of Misal. Garnish with finely chopped onion, tomato and coriander leaves . Now add little bit of farsan/spicy mixture/crushed potato chips and serve this along lime/lemon wedges and slices of white bread OR Pav .

Note :

Heat a table spoon of oil and add a spoonful of chili powder. Pour this over Misal curry to get fiery authentic look.

You can even use Green Moong Beans , white dried peas instead of Moth beans .

  1. You mention onions only in the serving, but what about the onions in the ingredients? You mention saute onions and curry leaves, etc.etc. And what is goda masala? tks.

    1. Aunty , onions are used twice . Ones while cooking Misal and again while serving . Goda masala is a Maharastrian masala , if you click on Goda masala , it will take you to the link on how to prepare it at home .
